Your gums are pink the soft tissues that cover the necks of your teeth. Keeping your gums clean and healthy. Gums had many roles, the first being to protect and cover the roots of your teeth. Gums also fill the spaces between your teeth and ensure a healthy seal.
Unfortunately gums can easily get infected due to poor oral hygiene. Accumulation of plaque and calculus on the surfaces of teeth can act as a constant source of infection resulting on inflammation of the gums. Depending on the severity, patients can present with gingivitis, periodontitis or worse conditions like loose teeth, bad breath, bleeding gums and gingival abscesses.
Initial Gum Disease
The good part about the initial stages of gum diseases like gingivitis, bleeding gums and bad breath is that the treatment is empirical. A simple round of oral prophylaxis followed by good oral hygiene is all that is required.
Advanced Gum Disease
However, in the later stages of periodontal disease, there is destruction and dissolution of bone that surrounds the teeth. This results in formations of gaps between teeth, gum recession, exposure of roots leading to sensitivity, mobility of teeth and pus formation.
What is the cure?
The best modality of treatment of gum diseases is prevention. Visiting the dentist once in six months and getting a prophylactic round of professional cleaning key to prevention. Following regular oral hygiene practices like brushing twice a day, flossing, using a water floss and mouth rinses are small steps but make a big impact on general oral wellbeing.
